Before starting on the first TSROS album in the early 2000s, I got to play with some great bands in Amherst, Mass. and Atlanta, Georgia. I have some video and/or audio clips from each of them which I'll upload here over time.
Working backward (as usual), I played drums with a psychedelic band called Eeyore from 1998-2000. Here's a clip from my first show with them, on the roof of my record store in Candler Park, Atlanta, GA.
and here we are at The Point in Little Five Points, Atlanta:
Before joining Eeyore, I played in a band called Joybang! We played from 1992 - 1996 and opened for Polvo, Blonde Redhead, Swervedriver, Smashing Pumkpins and others. We released two 7"s and a CD, and recorded six more songs for Bob Thiele, Jr. and EMI Records that are unreleased. Here's a clip from the Midtown Music Hall in Atlanta:
Before that, I played bass with a band called Mr. Crowe's Garden from 1986-1988. We opened for Alex Chilton, The Lyres, True Believers and others and recorded demos for A&M Records, which led to the band being signed to Def American Records by George Drakoulias, an A&R rep who saw us play in NYC. Here we are at the White Dot and Club Rio in Atlanta in 1987:
and here's an audio tape I came across recently; from the 40 Watt in Athens, GA...
The first band I joined in Atlanta was called Arms Akimbo. I played drums with them from 1984-1987. We opened for Let's Active, the Ramones, the Church, the Fleshtones, the Del Fuegos and others. Here we are opening for the Bongos at a great old Atlanta venue called the Moonshadow, where I saw Sun Ra for the first time a few years earlier.
In late 1985 and early 1986, while in Arms Akimbo, I also played drums with a new band in Atlanta called Drivin' 'n' Cryin' as their original drummer was having legal issues at the time. Here's an audio tape from the mixing board of a set we played at 688 in Atlanta, opening for Rank and File on Friday, Dec. 13, 1985.
Before moving to Atlanta, I attended UMass in Amherst and played drums in a band called Kaspar Hauser. We released a 7" in 1982 that David Minehan of the Neighborhoods produced, and we got to play shows with the Neighborhoods, the Scientific Americans, the Incredible Casuals, Dangerous Birds, 3 Colors, the Time Beings and more. The valley was happening!!
Here we are at the Blue Wall at UMass:
And here's an early set from "Zone" in Springfield, Mass. on April 24, 1982 for anyone who would like to hear more. I had to break it in two for the upload unfortunately:
I also played with a band called Yellow Dog Contract in 1984. I don't have any video but here's a song from the Hampshire College Tavern and a few from our practice space. The band included Jack Gould, Shambie Singer and Eric Avery (later of the amazing Jane's Addiction).
In the mid-late 1970s, I started to jam with other people in the Berkshires, where I was lucky enough to grow up. I met a really talented singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist named Michael Sell and he let me play some drums with him. He was a great guy and he had some really funky songs which I Ioved. I just digitized an old cassette tape, recorded at one of our practice/jams and it's great to hear the music again:
Lots more music to come!
